On April 3, 2025, in Bali, Indonesia, the delegation from the Chou Ta-Kuan Cultural and Educational Foundation and Ms. Zhang Yinjun were on the 3rdday of their humanitarian visit to Indonesia. The night before, due to a significant delay of the flight from Jakarta to Bali, the team arrived at their accommodation at nearly 4 a.m. on the third day. At this moment, a young woman on the island is eagerly awaiting the group. She is Winda Karunadhita, a renowned artist with disabilities from Bali.
Later, everyone gathered at a hotel owned by Metland for a warm and meaningful discussion on the dignity of life, art therapy, and social inclusion. Metland is a renowned real estate development company in Indonesia, actively engaging in corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities. Wenda is one of the disabled individuals supported by Metland's foundation.
A Disabled Body, A Masterful Soul
Winda Karunadhita, born in 1990 in Gianyar, Bali, has been afflicted with muscular dystrophy and severe scoliosis since she was seven, ultimately leaving her bedridden. She was compelled to interrupt her studies, yet she never relinquished her passion for knowledge and art. Through self-taught painting, she has gained widespread acclaim in the Indonesian art scene for her unique, delicate brushwork and vibrant colors.
Wenda's works focus on Bali's traditional
culture, everyday scenes, and the natural world of flora and fauna,
characterized by a meticulous and emotive style. It is commendable that she has
consistently used part of the proceeds from her artwork to support people with
disabilities like herself, encouraging them to pursue art as well. Wenda has
consistently extended kindness and shared warmth in her own unique way.
The Chou Ta-Kuan Foundation and the Beijing Changier Education Foundation both expressed their intention to use their respective platforms to recommend these outstanding artworks to a wider audience of art enthusiasts and charity-minded individuals.
Due to muscle atrophy and weakness, it
typically takes Wenda two to three months to finish a painting. Yet, her work
reveals no trace of resentment; instead, it offers more than just visual art.
Viewers encounter a powerful will to live and profound lessons on life. Every
life that is witnessed can become a spark to inspire others. The tears of
emotion at the meeting were a heartfelt tribute to Wenda's personal
vitality.
Art responds to suffering, as life illuminates life
Wenda represents not just the personal struggle of an artist but also embodies the countless individuals who, despite physical limitations, continue to strive upward. They need greater understanding and attention from society.
Wenda's story tells the world that the true
measure of life is not whether one's limbs are whole, but whether one has
ignited a spark in others. Just as Wenda uses her brush to paint the world's
hope, the Chou Ta-Kuan Foundation and the Beijing Changier Education Foundation
also aspire to be the spark that ignites hope, enabling more children's hearts
to be seen, understood, and treated with compassion. The two foundations
announced that art exhibitions for Winda Karunadhita would be held in both
Taiwan and Beijing, with all proceeds donated to those in need. In future
international collaborations, efforts will focus on integrating art into
education to support the psychological development of disadvantaged youth
through practices like visual arts, picture book creation, and music
therapy.
