Qi, a sophomore in college, has a cheerful voice on the phone but is somewhat reserved in person.
Before interning at Beijing Changier Education Foundation, she familiarized herself with the current state of charitable organizations in China and their primary initiatives. However, upon arriving at the office, things were somewhat different from her expectations.
Beijing Changier Education Foundation has projects in 99 regions across 29 provinces in China and even abroad. Yet, at its Beijing headquarters, there were only about a dozen colleagues. These multitasking individuals always seemed busy but exuded optimism and energy. What is motivating this group?
As Qi delved deeper into her internship, she began to unravel the mystery. She discovered a shared sense of purpose and passion within Changier, which drives these individuals. Whether it's in projects promoting adolescent AIDS prevention, sex education, mental health, or assisting children and teenagers in poverty alleviation initiatives, everyone shares a common goal: advancing love education for the young, making love and kindness accessible to all.
This mission permeates everyone's work, from senior management to volunteers. They understand the impact of their work on society and realize that even seemingly minor tasks can lead to significant changes for a family or child. Such realization fuels their dedication.
Studying finance in school, Qi noted that many around her were wary of donating to charitable organizations, likely due to a lack of understanding of how donations are utilized. She wishes to use her expertise to address this issue.
To test the waters, Qi made a symbolic one-yuan donation to Beijing Changier Education Foundation's online fundraising project "Love Education Charity Project." She found that this small charitable contribution was meticulously tracked. From obtaining a charity certificate, tracking the donation, receiving feedback on the project's progress, to progress reports, every detail was transparently communicated. Some platforms even implemented blockchain functionality, ensuring every act of love from the donor to the beneficiary was traceable and verifiable. Every colleague in the office was also a long-time donor. Many desks showcased various annual charity honor certificates. Donors could voluntarily apply for these certificates each year, documenting their total annual donations, the number of donations made, and even counts of other charitable acts like donated steps, donated flowers, or donated smiles. "Even though it was just one yuan," Qi reflected, "through this donation, I felt the strict standardization, openness, transparency, timeliness, and professionalism of charity fund management. I also recognized the positive power of technology in charity." Elated, Qi plans to share her insights and feelings with friends and family when the new semester starts, hoping to alleviate their concerns and encourage them to contribute their love.
Lian, also a sophomore majoring in International Studies, is well-read. However, he yearns to move beyond the confines of textbooks and immerse himself in the real-world social landscape, experiencing the world's wonders from a unique perspective and understanding the magic of philanthropy. "Knowledge gained from books feels superficial; true understanding comes from personal experience." He recognizes that to elevate his understanding and acquire genuine skills, he must actively engage in practice, be humble, learn from seniors, and also from the masses.
Beijing Changier Education Foundation assigned Lian tasks such as archiving and scanning documents. Although these duties might seem mundane and mechanical, Lian discovered a whole new world within them. He came in contact with children and teenagers either supported or awaiting support from the foundation. He realized that while the government has done a lot to assist them in poverty alleviation and rural revitalization, many families still need more help due to unforeseen accidents, illnesses, or loss of family members. As he delved deeper into these children's backgrounds and stories, Lian recognized that although one cannot choose their background, they can certainly choose their future. Behind every file and story, he felt the gaze of expectation, fueling his desire to be more deeply involved in charitable endeavors.
This hands-on experience made Lian realize that no charitable act is too small. In Changier's projects, he participated in organizing foundational materials on teenage AIDS prevention, sex education, and mental health. Through this, he glimpsed into the unique inner world of teenagers, hearing their genuine and valuable voices. "It's these heartfelt voices that provide reliable data samples and a foundation for the design of the Changier projects, allowing the goodwill of society to assist them more precisely," Lian reflected profoundly.
During Qi and Lian's philanthropic experiences, they met Li Yifei, a senior high school student who had previously donated a multifunctional conference room to Changier. Earlier, while studying in the US for her junior year, Yifei inadvertently learned about Changier's efforts in the realm of adolescent AIDS prevention and sexual health, and the transformative impact it had on the youth and their families. This sparked a desire within her: she wanted high school students to be involved in charitable work in their own unique way.
To realize this dream, Yifei leveraged her expertise in interior design and collaborated with a design company in Shanghai to create a 3D model of the conference room. Eager to see the conference room come to fruition sooner, she specially visited her aunt and uncle in Los Angeles to pitch the project, successfully securing the initial funding for it.
In a bid to secure sustained collaborations, Yifei even established a foundation, harnessing various new media platforms specifically to raise funds for her "Dream Space". After six months of relentless effort, the conference room, wholly conceptualized and realized by Yifei, was finally completed and put to use. Xing Haiyan, the Secretary-General of the Beijing Changier Education Foundation, expressed her gratitude for Yifei's charitable endeavors, saying, "Before this room, we had to arrange our daily meetings and interactions in external coffee shops or conference rooms. Now, with our own space, both domestic and international meetings, as well as various online and offline interactions, have become much more convenient."
Now, sitting in this room with her mother, Yifei feels an overwhelming sense of joy. The room seemed even more spacious and impressive than she had originally envisioned. She was particularly moved when she watched a video highlighting Changier's two-decade-long journey in philanthropy, learning about Chairman Zhang Yinjun's story of perseverance through adversities, and the profound mission and vision of the Beijing Changier Education Foundation. With deep emotion, Yifei remarked, "Initially, I only had a simple wish—to design this space using my expertise and to give more kind-hearted individuals, like myself, the opportunity to contribute. I wanted to see if high school students could also be part of philanthropy in their own unique way, and I didn't expect it to truly materialize!" Yifei's words were filled with emotion and excitement.
That evening, the three passionate young volunteers sat together, sharing their aspirations for charitable work. They knew that participating in philanthropy requires more time and effort, but they firmly believed it was worth it. Even though their internship at the Beijing Changier Education Foundation wasn't long, only about a month, they all desired to delve deeper into charity work.
For this purpose, Qi attended a sex education teacher training session in Dalian. She particularly admired Ms. Bai Lu for her professionalism and affability. Many teachers were receiving training for the first time and needed to undergo a desensitization process. Faced with various questions, Ms. Bai was relaxed, poised, calm, and natural. "We don't need to make a fuss about the topic of sex education because it's part of our lives. While it's indeed a sensitive topic, not discussing it doesn't mean it isn't needed. Avoidance can't solve the problem. It's the absence of sex education that makes us realize its importance and urgency. Only by confronting it, recognizing it, and accepting it can we have a chance to change it," said Qi.
As a current university student, Lian has a deep understanding of college students' perspectives and the extent of their participation in activities. Hence, he was especially involved in the Beijing Changier Education Foundation's planning, promotion, and fundraising for "International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on June 26th" and "99 Giving Day". He proposed many innovative and feasible ideas. He stated, "Being able to offer whatever help I can to those in need is an honor for me. In the future, if I have more time, I hope to get closer to them, understand their stories, and convey more authentic voices from the frontline of AIDS prevention to the society." Xiao Lian said with anticipation.
The chairman of the Beijing Changier Education Foundation, Zhang Yinjun, felt gratified by the growth of philanthropy interns of these three students. Every step they took on the path of charity, every growth they experienced, and every act of kindness they showed, was noticed and deeply felt within Changier. The three of them shared common traits: they came from relatively affluent families with strong support from their parents and loved ones. Coupled with their unique educational backgrounds and expertise, as well as their distinctive understanding and practice of philanthropy, they represent a new force in the future of charitable endeavors. It's hoped that this charitable experience will always remind them of the spirit of "self-benefit for the benefit of others" in their future life journeys. Beijing Changier Education Foundation will always support and bless their wonderful lives.
