From October 6th to 10th, with the invitation from China NGO Network for International Exchanges and Foreign Affairs office of the people’s government of Beijing Municipality, APEPCY(AIDS Prevention Education Project for Chinese Youth) participated in the C20 Civil Society (C20) Summit. CC20 is one of the eight official Engagement Groups of the G20. It provides a platform of Civil Society Organizations around the world to bring forth a non-government and non-business voice. It provides a space through which global civil society organizations can contribute in a structured and sustained manner to the G20. The C20 has been working to ensure that world leaders listen to voices beyond those of government and business since it became on Official Engagement Group of the G20 in 2013.
Affected by COVID-19 pandemic, C20 Summit 2020 went virtual and hosted by the Saudi Khalid King Foundation. The key theme for C20 2020 summit is "Every Voice Counts" and discussed five key issues – COVID-19 Response & Recovery; Economic & Social Justice; Wellbeing of People & Planet; Citizen Agency & Empowerment; and Accountability & Transparency. The summit held 5 general meetings and 62 parallel meetings. More than 4,000 representatives from government bodies, social organizations and international institutions from the G20, as well as experts and scholars attended this summit. The summit discussed and passed the adoption of the Communique of the G20 Civil Society Conference 2020.
Both Yinjun Zhang, chairman of APEPCY and Emma Chen-Banas, UN Representative and Special Director of North America, Participated in the summit and discussed with conference leaders and guests speakers about the importance of AIDS prevention and sex education for youth in the schools, and recommended to actively promote AIDS prevention and education due to the predication of shortage of AIDS testing and drugs price increase because of the pandemic.
Peter Sands, Executive Director of the Global Fund for AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, said the world would face shortages of testing and drugs over the next five years as a result of the COVID-19, with prices likely to rise 20-50%.
With the anticipation of the shortage and price increase for AIDS testing and drugs, it is more important to actively promote AIDS prevention and education related solutions. Peter Sands and the experts suggested that the leaders of G20 members and guest countries should pay greater emphasis on the AIDS prevention efforts; social organizations should actively apply for funding from the government or relevant international organizations for AIDS prevention education; and strengthen the cooperation and collaboration among civil society organizations.
