Editor's Note: The mission of the Beijing Changier Education Foundation is to promote the Education of Love among young people, making love and kindness accessible to everyone. A critical aspect of this mission is fostering a public welfare mindset among the youth. During the 2024 99 Giving Day, the Foundation collaborated with over 450 affiliated Changier Huts and Maternal Love Academies across schools and communities nationwide. Led by their parents, a large number of compassionate young people ventured into public spaces, deeply engaging with communities, villages, and shopping centers to spread warmth and goodwill far and wide.
During the 2024 99 Giving Day, Zhang Xiaoxin, Dean of the Xi'an Mingde Academy Station of APEPCY, set up a charity booth at Xi'an Wanda Plaza. She also conducted pre-event promotions at a parents' book club, recruiting young charity ambassadors and advocating for parent-child charity activities. On September 7 and 8, coinciding with the weekend, many charity-minded parents participated with their families, turning the event into a joyful sea of children.
Lele's mother has always enjoyed excellent traditional Chinese culture. In June this year, she attended a two-day course on "The Path to Wealth" at Mingde Academy and subsequently joined a book club. "It can help children in mountainous areas who are in difficult situations, and it can plant a seed of kindness in my own child's heart," Lele's mother found this activity very meaningful, and the family of four arrived at the event venue early.
Their first stop was a cafe. Facing the crowd of customers, Lele felt a bit uneasy. Compared to organizing materials or participating in charity sales, this was a much bigger challenge: What if they say no?
Noticing Lele's hesitation, her mother encouraged her, saying, "Everyone has a kind heart. If you speak up bravely, they might be looking for a way to help children in need." With these words, she guided Lele to a stranger and said, "Hello, I'm a volunteer with the Beijing Changier Education Foundation. Today, I've brought my child out to do some charity work, hoping to raise awareness about the healthy growth of youths nationwide and help more children and families in need. Could you scan the code to make a donation?"
"Mom is such a social pro," Lele thought, genuinely admiring her. Her mother's success in soliciting donations gave Lele a huge confidence boost. "If Mom can do it, so can I," Lele encouraged herself. Mindful that every act of kindness counts, no matter how small, her mother suggested Lele start with "Donate one yuan, become a part of love."
Lele discussed with her mom, "Can we start in less crowded places so I can introduce one by one?" Her mom happily agreed. They went to the second floor of the mall and started with the staff at the shop counters. During the initial attempts, Lele completed the task with her mom's help. By the fourth and fifth times, as Lele managed to solicit donations on her own, her mother saw a smile gradually spread across Lele's face.
Whenever someone declined, Lele still felt discouraged and a bit guilty. She even wanted to chase after them to ask, "Was it because I didn't explain clearly? It's my first time doing this, and I can try to explain better."
Her mother told her, "Not everything goes smoothly. One-yuan donations are affordable for everyone, but sometimes trust is lacking. Our job is to bridge that trust with kindness." To keep Lele from getting discouraged and giving up, her mother suggested, "How about we set a small goal—successfully solicit donations from 10 strangers?" Lele felt that since it was a goal, it should be more ambitious, and said, "Mom, I think 20 people would be fine." Inspired by Lele, many children at the scene joined in, becoming little volunteers for Changier's charity alongside her.
Her mother noticed that at first, Lele would carefully choose who to approach in each shop. Later, she would walk into any shop and engage strangers directly. This spontaneous, proactive, and enthusiastic attitude, the joy of helping others, and the overwhelming confidence and sense of achievement after completing challenges were what her mother described as "the treasures inside the child coming out." When a staff member invited Lele to shoot a promotional video, she replied, "No, we haven't finished our task yet."
"Would you like to encourage this little volunteer?" After each successful donation, her mother would invite the donor to take a photo with Lele. From 10 AM to 12 PM, Lele received donations from over 40 kind-hearted individuals, leaving her both surprised and proud. Some donated one yuan and received a special matching donation gift package, making everyone very happy. Lele also met a busy auntie at a counter who directly said, "Kid, here's my phone. You handle the process, and let me know when you need to enter the password."
Lele, taking off her mask, revealed a radiant smile and said, "I am also surprised at how well I did." She initially thought communicating with strangers would be difficult, but once she tried, she realized it wasn't as hard as she imagined. Not only did she break through her own limitations, but she also helped many other children, which made her very happy. "Even if I'm just a drop of water, I can still feel the joy of helping others when I merge into the ocean of love," she added.
