Before this year's day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking, the Central Committee held a meeting and put forward “Win the People's War on drug in the new era”, changing the previous slogan of "Win the People's War on Drug and AIDS" from 2005. Looking at the national situation, drug control and AIDS prevention were closely related, since injecting drugs used to be an important channel for the transmission of AIDS. The spread of drug-related HIV/AIDS is slowly declining with the advent of new drugs and increased anti-drug efforts, but it still casts a shadow in remote areas.
Professor Cheng Jing, head of Sichuan Xinlian Base of APEPCY: "The change of knowledge is easy, more important is the change of behavior. Why is there still such a high rate of infection when so many people know the three ways of transmission? As educators of deeper level and AIDS prevention volunteers, this is a problem we should think about."
Zhan Chengdong, student volunteer of APEPCY, said, "We are now doing a baseline survey of HIV/AIDS among the floating population. The survey found that many people do not know enough about HIV/AIDS. We need to improve people’s awareness by carrying out more campaign and making full use of the publicity and education function of the campaign."
The damages caused by drug abuse are not only for the user himself, but also extends his family and even the next generation. Some people originally infected with AIDS by injecting drug. Due to the ignorance and other factors, infected men infect their wives with the virus. Their wives got pregnant and passed the virus on to the children. This chain covers almost all three routes of HIV transmission: blood, sex and mother-to-child.
School is fundamental for AIDS prevention and control education for teenagers and sex education is the main battle. Since its inception in 2006, APEPCY has been committed to the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS among Chinese youth. One may not immediately see good results when this work is done well, but one will immediately see bad consequences when it is done badly.
Zero AIDS is just a goal. There is too much work to do and too much road to cover to achieve this goal.
